Interview: Betraying The Martyrs

Betraying The Maryrs is relatively new to the American metal scene, but the guys have been playing to their audience in France and many other countries in Europe for the past two years. The band brings intensity to the stage and positivity through their lyrics. BTM was brought to America through Sumerian Records and recently did their first tour in the U.S. with fellow Sumerian labelmates Born of Osiris and Veil Of Maya on “The Discovery Tour.”
Sound Scene Press was recently able to exchange some questions with BTM’s frontman Aaron Matts.
SSP: You guys just got finished with your first tour in the states, how did it go?
Aaron: It was totally awesome! It was such a pleasure for us to tour alongside such great bands, however the tour went it was always gonna be great fun for us. But the shows went really well and we were so surprised at the response we had, we couldn’t be happier!
Any plan to return to the U.S. soon?
We always have plans to travel and tour as much as possible, we want to play wherever will have us and are so excited to see and play to the world, and of course the U.S. is no exception, we love it there and we love the people, and cannot wait to get back out there!
If someone has never heard you before, what should people be expecting from Betraying The Martyrs sound?
The simplest and most understandable way I could put it is in the same words as our label Sumerian: For fans of Born of Osiris, Winds of Plague, and Asking Alexandria. Just for the fact that we have technical and progressive riffs in places, a dark synth and piano base with black metal elements, and also melodic and epic clean parts.
BTM’s lyrics have a lot of positive messages, where do you guys draw influence from when writing lyrics?
We take influence from personal experiences, real things, and things that we have all seen and experienced ourselves, we have a positive message and it is aimed at everyone, we want the widest possible audience to be touched by our music and really hope everybody can find a way to relate to our subjects.
Your album Breathe In Life has only been out for a few months, but do you guys have any new music in the works?
Yeah all the time, whether we’re at home or out on the road, we are always writing and working on new music. We’re coming along nice and naturally with our new stuff and are fully preparing for the release of a new CD when the time comes!
What are the major goals for BTM for 2012?
Touring, touring, and more touring, to go where we can, take it as far as we can, and of course a new release. In between these we want to put out as much as we can, music videos, updates, anything to keep others as motivated as we are.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Thank you so much for your time, it’s a pleasure for us all! Never forget that life is beautiful and is definitely worth living, take care of yourself and people you truly love, try to stay positive no matter what ! Please keep listening and supporting, and we hope to see you in a town near you soon. Cheers.
Betraying The Martyrs will continue touring in Europe this winter in support to their first full-length Breathe In Life, available now through Sumerian Records.
